What is Upward Bound?

Upward Bound is a college preparatory program, federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education, designed to help low-income, first generation students enroll in and complete post-secondary education. 

The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their high education pursuits. Upward bound serves high school student from low-income families and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education. 

Types of Projects

Upward bound projects provide academic instruction in mathematics, laboratory sciences, composition, literature, and foreign languages. Tutoring, counseling, mentoring, cultural enrichment, work-study programs, education or counseling services designed to improve the financial and economic literacy of students; and programs and activities previously mentioned that are specially designed for students who are limited in English proficiency, students from groups that are traditionally underrepresented i postsecondary education, students with disabilities, students who are homeless children and youths, students who are in foster care or are aging out of the foster care system or disconnected students.

  • Income verification: Parent(s)' or guardian(s)' 1040 forms, or public assistance statement, check stubs, W2, 1099, unemployment documents, or SSI, etc.

  • Counselor & Teacher recommendation forms

  • Copy of social security card

  • Official high school transcripts

  • Standardized test records

We have partnered with East West University, located in downtown Chicago, to host all of our in person sessions. This is where we hold our year round weekend and summer workshop sessions.
